Celebrating 25 Years of Vanessa Arbuthnott Fabrics: In Conversation with Fern Britton
This year, we are delighted to celebrate a significant milestone for Vanessa Arbuthnott Fabrics – our silver anniversary! Since Vanessa started her business from her kitchen table in 2000, she has created beautiful, timeless fabrics that are cherished in many homes across the UK.
To mark this special anniversary, we’re speaking to some of our wonderful customers who have woven Vanessa’s fabrics into the hearts of their homes. Among them is the much-admired television presenter and author, Fern Britton, whose timeless elegance and classic taste shine through her interiors. Fern has welcomed us into her beautifully inviting home – a perfect blend of rustic charm and characterful style – where her well-loved Vanessa Arbuthnott fabrics and furniture contribute to a space full of warmth, life and character.
In this exclusive Fern Britton interview, Fern talks us through the Vanessa Arbuthnott fabrics and furniture in her home, and shares what caught her imagination about Vanessa’s designs and how they continue to inspire her. And she is not the only Vanessa Arbuthnott fan in her household – you’ll see glimpses of her cat, Barbara, in some of the photographs alongside the fabrics!
Let’s dive straight in…
Interiors Q&A with Fern Britton
When did you first discover Vanessa Arbuthnott Fabrics?
“I discovered Vanessa Arbuthnott at least 15 years ago and was absolutely blown away by her colours and designs. I knew immediately that I wanted to bring some of Vanessa’s vibrant designs into my home. My old pink sofa, which is still going strong, was one of my first purchases. It’s covered in a rich Raspberry Plain Linen Union fabric, and I like to think of it as my reward after 16 years of cats and children running around!”
Where can we find Vanessa Arbuthnott Fabrics in your home?
“Vanessa’s fabrics are scattered all throughout my house! You’ll find them in my bedroom, living room, office, and of course, my kitchen. They bring so much character and warmth to every room.”
Which is your favourite VA design, and why?
“I have two kitchen armchairs that I adore. They’re very old but sturdy, and I just couldn’t bring myself to replace them with something mass-produced. One of the chairs is upholstered in For the Love of Rose in Raspberry Pink & White, and the other in For the Love of Rose in Saffron & Charcoal. I absolutely love the romantic story behind the design – the gypsy caravan and chickens bring such a sense of whimsy and nostalgia.
And recently, I’ve added a new piece to my home – a medium-sized sofa in Sunflower in Ochre. It’s so cheerful and vibrant, and it’s incredibly comfortable too.”
What’s your favourite VA colour, and why?
“I have so many favourite colours – I’m all about mixing things up! I love combining pinks with blues, yellows, and oranges for a fun, fresh look. One of my favourite patterns is Life & Eternity, which I have in my kitchen. The teal motif on the cream background adds a beautiful burst of colour to the room.”
Why do you choose to buy Vanessa Arbuthnott Fabrics?
“Vanessa’s fabrics are truly timeless. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but they’re also hard-wearing and practical. They’re the kind of fabrics you can live with every day. There’s something special about them that makes you feel connected to nature, and they make every space feel so inviting and personal.”
