Made to Measure Roller Blinds
Will your woven linen fabrics make beautiful Made to Measure roller blinds?
Yes absolutely! Our Made to Measure curtains from my woven linens are a must. There is something very special about hand woven fabrics, which in this case are hand-loomed with incredible expertise and love.
Most are made from 100% Linen, with the Malmo in Linen Union. These fabrics are a beautiful collection of timeless woven stripes where the pattern is integrated into the fabric through weaving rather than printing. The yarns are dyed and then intricately woven together.
The IKAT part of the stripe, (a characteristic of IKAT fabrics is an apparent irregular "blurriness" to the design), is created here by screen printing the colour onto the warp (north to south) threads, and then the weft (west to east) is woven across them producing the irregular and famous IKAT shapes.
We love the colour and texture of woven fabrics as well as the handle and feel of the spun yarns. Designing the Scandinavian woven fabrics for this collection has taught me a great deal. These Scandinavian fabrics have a strong Nordic theme, from my Lapland Stripe, which is inspired by the rural life and simple landscapes of the Sami people in Lapland, to the more contemporary feel of my Scandi Stripe, which I have produced in two striking colourways: Warm & Cool. Baltic Stripe is a chic IKAT print. Nordic Stripe brings a warm chestnut brown I have called "Reindeer." And last but not least, Malmo, a vibrantly coloured striped design with blue, red, and orange embroidery diamond motifs running vertically.
Pros for Roller Blinds:
GREAT FOR INSIDE A RECESS – Roller Blinds are a great option if you want to install a blind inside a recess because they are really easy to fit, lightweight, practical, easily adjustable with beaded chains (or ivory cord), and visually very stylish.
PELMETS - if you have your blind inside a recess, you can choose to have a smart, perfectly pattern matched pelmet that covers the roll at the top revealing the reverse lining; this is approximately 11 cm deep. It has revolutionised the use of Roller Blinds, making them much more attractive and usable in all rooms of a house!
MAXIMUM LIGHT – if you want to allow in as much natural light as possible, Roller Blinds may be the better option over Roman Blinds. With Roller Blinds, the fabric rolls up at the top of your window and will take up about 9 cm of space.
CENTRAL PULL – with a Roller Blind you can have a centre pull which can be handy on a window behind the kitchen sink. This comes with an ivory coloured cord and wooden acorn.
LOWER MAINTENANCE – once you have pulled up a Roman Blind you sometimes have to handle the folds as they can get caught in the cords, you don’t have this problem with Roller Blinds. It is just one piece of fabric that is adjusted with either a continuous beaded chain to either the left or right hand side of the blind, or as previously mentioned, a centre pull.
TREATMENT OPTIONS - We offer three different finishings on our Roller Blinds: Laminate, Blackout, and Processed. The laminated backing is a lining bonded onto the face of the fabric (no lamination takes place to the face fabric). Blackout is an off-white lining, which again is bonded to the fabric but is ideal for privacy. And Processed is just the fabric on its own with that has a clear stiffening spray applied to it for rigidness.
STYLISH IN DESIGN - You have a lot of creative freedom when it comes to the finished look of your Roller Blind. In addition to a pelmet, you can also add a 5 cm contrasting bottom border. Any of our other fabrics can be used for this, for example Gypsy Garland in Dove, with a bottom border in Stockholm Stripe - Dove, Winter. You could also opt for a Plain Linen Union in Saffron border instead, to go with the Gypsy, depending on the other colours in your room. The choice is yours to coordinate as you see fit!
Also if you can’t reach the top of the window at all easily, a roller blind with a pelmet to hide the roll might be the right choice as you will have no need to reach to the top ever…maximum size for roller and roman blinds is 240cm x 240cm.
You can order your Made to Measure Blinds, Curtains, Cushions and more, straight from our website. The online video guide will help you measure your windows for blinds. For a written guide on how to measure, please click here where you can print or download a copy for yourself.
Please ask for fabric samples and see the colours in your rooms. If you order a half metre returnable sample you can drape them over your existing blinds, or just in situ to where the shade will go, and see how it looks.

How to measure up for your Roller Blind:
Inside a window recess
Width: Measure the width of the recess from the left to the right (see E on the diagram)
Length: Measure from the top of the recess to the bottom (see E on the diagram)
YOU ONLY NEED TO PROVIDE US WITH THE FULL RECESS MEASUREMENT - the maker will allow for the rolling mechanism when making the blinds (There will be a gap of about 1.5cm between the fabric and the recess wall which will allow some light through, even with a blackout lining)
Outside a window recess
Width: Measure the outside of the window recess (see F on diagram) and add at least 5cms on each side to minimise any light leaking through.
Length: Measure from the required position above the window (we recommend adding at least 5cm), to the length you require (see F on the diagram)
This also applies to blinds that will be fitted to the outside of a door recess, we only need the width and length that you would like the finished blind to be.
Please note that if your roller blind is outside the recess, we have to allow for the mechanism at either side of the roller blind, which is usually 1.5cm each side. For example, if you want the fabric width of your blind to measure 100cm, you need to specify this upon placing your order as 'finished fabric width', otherwise our makers will assume it is the recess width, and cut the fabric down to 97cm with the remaining 3cm for the mechanism, i.e. 100cm full fabric width + 3cm for mechanism, making the final recess width 103cm.
Your Roller blinds will be delivered complete with hanging instructions and fittings.
