Are Roman Blinds a good choice for kitchens?

Roman blinds make an excellent choice for kitchens, where window sills become useful and the room is busy with kitchen paraphernalia! Roman blinds are a simple and stylish solution for kitchens.

Which of your fabrics would look best in a kitchen?

The most popular fabrics for kitchens are Dawn Chorus, Cow Parsley, Acorn and Leaf, and Cockerel and Spot; but all of the fabrics are suitable so really its down to your individual choice!

What are the benefits of using Roman Blinds in a kitchen?

Best for insulation – roman blinds can be made with an interlining, which is where a thick material is sandwiched in between the face fabric and the cotton lining, to give the blind a fuller look which in turn creates a more sumptuous window dressing. If you’re looking to keep the heat in or if your windows are particularly draughty, then this interlining adds to the blinds thermal properties as it creates another layer for the cold air to penetrate. For this reason, roman blinds are better suited for draughty and cold rooms.

More fabric showing – one of the main benefits of roman blinds is the amount of pattern shown whether the blind is up or down. If choosing a fabric with a pattern that is a key part of your design scheme, then a Roman Blind will dress your window and make it a feature more than a roller blind. Ideally, placing a roman blind outside the window recess is the best option, as this also helps to make the window appear larger.

Borders - You can add a 5 cm contrasting bottom border, or an all-round border on the right, left, and bottom edge of the blind. Any of Vanessa's fabrics can be used for this, for example Gypsy Garland in Dove, with a bottom border in Stockholm Stripe - Dove, Winter, or Pretty Maids in Dove and Winter. Plain linen unions also make great borders for Roman Blinds.

Roman Blinds can be made for you through our Made to Measure service with fabrics printed in the UK on a good weight of 100% Linen and Linen Unions. We hold a good stock of all our fabrics.

HOW TO MEASURE UP FOR YOUR ROMAN BLINDS

INSIDE A WINDOW RECESS

Width: Measure across the recess at several points and give the narrowest measurement minus 1cm for clearance so the blind will run freely (see E on the diagram)

Length: Measure from the top of the recess to the bottom (see E on the diagram)

OUTSIDE A WINDOW RECESS

Width: Measure the width of the recess and add at least 5cms on each side for overlapping (see F on the diagram)

Length: Measure from the required starting position above the window to the length you require, adding 5cms on the length
